Introduction to Safety Management Systems and Human Factors for Airports
Course Overview
This course is designed for personnel working at certified Canadian airports with responsibilities on airside and meets the requirements of CAR302.07(1)(g). It provides an overview of the history and regulatory requirements for Safety Management Systems (SMS) and how they impact the worker's role and responsibilities; in addition to an understanding of human and organizational factors and how they contribute to accidents and incidents, and how they can be managed and prevented in practical terms that are specifically tailored to airport workers.
Upon completion of this course, you will have a basic understanding of Safety Management Systems, why they are required and how you can help your airport remain in compliance with regulatory obligations. You will also be familiarized with human factors, the role they play in incidents and accidents which may occur at airports and practical ways in which you can prevent them from negatively affecting you and your airport through your daily work.
Introduction to Safety Management Systems
Chapter 1: Why Safety Management Systems?
We explore how Safety Management Systems became a part of the aviation industry as we know it today including the roles that ICAO and Transport Canada have and continue to play in aviation safety.
Chapter 2: What is a Safety Management System?
We look at the six components of an SMS and what they look like when implemented into the operation of an airport along with the important documentation, policies, processes and systems that comprise an effective SMS.
Chapter 3: Regulatory Compliance
The Airport Certificate is a valuable piece of paper - without it, an airport can be greatly restricted in its ability to operate. In this chapter, we review what it takes for an airport to remain in compliance with applicable regulations.
Chapter 4: SMS at your Airport
We examine what a Safety Management System might look like at your airport and how you can be involved in keeping the airport safe through participation in the airport's safety culture, reporting and carrying out your everyday duties.
Chapter 5: The Role of Human Factors
This chapter introduces accident causation through models which will help in identifying the role human factors play in unwanted outcomes.
Chapter 6: Identifying Human Factors
We further explore factors affecting human performance and their classification in order to recognize and be able to mitigate them.
Chapter 7: Human Factors Defined - The Dirty Dozen
We navigate the most common human error preconditions from an airport perspective and discuss tips for prevention of each.
Chapter 8: Human Performance
We look at ways to monitor and improve our performance as a means of avoiding errors.
Chapter 9: Impact on Airports
Discussion about key points of human performance that must be considered in order to stay safe in our everyday work.
Chapter 10: Application and Prevention
Review, challenge and steps to consider following completion of this course.
